The last thing Eve expects when a tornado destroys her home is to find solace through her seemingly stodgy yet strangely compelling insurance adjuster. The bohemian Eve quickly learns, though, that you can't judge a book by its three-piece cover.

Jared is a man with a past — an exciting, glamorous past ultimately tainted by an ugly mystery, a past he considers a shameful secret. As he and Eve develop a passionate intimacy, she not only learns the nature of this secret but becomes determined to help solve the dark riddle that clouds it.

Their quest takes Eve and Jared from Minnesota to Florida and through an assortment of colorful characters. But laying old ghosts to rest is only half the battle. Eve wants Jared to return to the former lifestyle that brought him so much joy and fulfillment before it went sour. He, however, wants to keep trudging along his new path—predictable, secure and risk-free.
