It’s Gemma’s thirty-second birthday. She’s not surprised when her gorgeous husband Nate whips out the blindfold and orders her to bend over for a birthday spanking. What does surprise her is that Nate has enlisted the help of a friend. Another woman!

Lindsey is a sexy Bohemian artist who has starred in Gemma’s fantasies for a long while. She doesn’t know what will happen beyond this single night of scorching sex play, but for now, Gemma fully intends to enjoy every new touch, taste, sight and sound her “birthday gift” has to offer.

"Birthday Girl" is a book I kind of liked when I wanted to love it. Perhaps the story "tries too hard," I found it so inconsistent in places. None of the characters seem to know their own minds or know for sure what they really want from this relationship. Part One, Gemma "giving herself to the moment" and enjoying her surprise, is scintillating reading. From there, though, the book descends into ambivalent emotions and behaviors from all three of the characters. Paisley Smith devotes too much word count to P.C. inquiries and narrative establishing who's straight, who's not, who's involved/committed, who's not. I realize this is marketed as women's erotica and not erotic romance, but the P.C. efforts pulled me out of the book. Can't the characters enjoy a threesome just because they're attracted to each other and really want it to happen? At times, Gemma's "voice" is almost schizophrenic in its inconsistency. (from book: "My gaze darted from her eyes to her full lips and fresh desire to kiss her welled. She shifted toward me. As if I possessed no will of my own, I...devoured her mouth..." If Gemma desires the kiss, how can her actions be beyond her will? The author seems anxious to imply that Gemma's part in the "birthday surprise" is passive, yet all the while Gemma admits "I'm into women. I'm into Lindsey." Later in the book, Gemma reveals her earliest experiences with bisexuality "after a few drinks and some encouragement from frat boys." Gemma doesn't appear to ever voluntarily embrace her bisexuality; earlier in life, frat boys and drinking encouraged her, and presently, her darling husband set everything up, blindfolding her to "surprise" her with a female playmate. The term "offended buttocks" made me laugh -- it's used frequently in the short story. I kept expecting Gemma's rump to file a complaint. Despite my peeves, "Birthday Girl" has some wonderful, erotic moments. I would read more of Smith's work to see her craft evolve.

Very hot, very enjoyable, wish the story had been longer and given a chance to see where it went.

This was my first time reading this author and a menage story with m/f/f. The storyline was hot and the connection between all three made it completely believable. Sex: burning hot! Great read and can't wait to read more by Paisley Smith!
