When Pearl’s sheltered life shatters in the 1930s with her mother’s death, her only option is to move in with poor relatives and shuck oysters in the local plant on Oyster Island, Maryland.

Determined to live a morally proper life, the last thing she wants is an affair with a white man, but Caleb, the plant owner, knows a pearl when he sees one. The successful widower is the “oyster king” of the island, but his intense desire for his forbidden new employee, a woman of color, threatens everything he’s built.

What begins as a private sexual liaison flowers into strong feelings that don’t fit the social mores of the island. When their secret is discovered, they risk losing everything. They dared to pluck the pearl, but will their love be strong enough to keep it forever?

One of the best books I have read in a long time. From a 1 to 10 I gave it a 8.....simple because I never wanted the book to end ....selfishiness aside it is a 10....great read, great book. Bravo to the writer! Five stars.

This was an awesome book! I love interracial stories, but this one was so unique and worth the price I paid for it! I think she dealt with the racial turmoil well as well as kept with the story. I love this story and could not put it down!

Okay so the cover really caught my eye, but that can only carry a book so far, right? Well, Plucking the Pearl lives up to the hot cover! I'm a fan of both IR and historicals so this was an automatic buy for me since you rarely see both in one book. Of course, I was skeptical from the jump since I was expecting all kinds of hot sex and very little story. Oh and a weak, unbelievable resolution that would give the hero and heroine a happily ever after. But no, the author stayed true to the time period, which is the during the Great Depression, so of course there were so many twists and turns and road blocks created by society's restrictions, my stomach was tied in knots almost to the very end! And even at the end you weren't really sure if they were going to be together. All in all this was a really well written book. The characters and the time period really jumped off the page for me. I'm hoping for more books!

First off, the cover HOT! This was a wonderfully written story regarding a black woman meeting and falling in love with a white man of power set in 1963. It was ALL kinds of wonderful. It really made me realize how different things were just a couple of decades ago. It's really quite sad and moving because what they went through someone really did go through. The ending was rushed. Very rush. I was it had the slow build as the entire story did but still a very good story. One of the best I've ever read. Pearl was sweet and refreshingly honest yet was maddening. Towards the end, I felt her characters changed and not for the better. She was acting crazy and had NO reason (ok, she had reasons) and even though she thought it was for the best. smh. She had to have a dumb woman moment. Cable *sigh* Awesome. Depply conflicted with his feelings for Pearl and the way the world viewed him. He wanted Pearl and what they had yet still wanted the respect and power he had. Which sadly, didn't go hand in hand. But he was amazing and he tried to do everything to the best of ability even when he failed. Sex was hot. Hotter than hot. There was plenty of it--almost too much of it and there wasn't enough foreplay for my liking at times but awesome.
