They say she’s a Rebel spy…

Rosalie O’Kelley is not above using her feminine wiles to secure much-needed supplies for her fellow townspeople. But when Union Colonel Eric Skaarsberg is put in charge, Rose’s usual tactics fail miserably. In exchange for supplies, she comes to a scandalous arrangement with him. She agrees to become his willing plaything—to fulfill his every physical need, eagerly and without hesitation.

Eric is duty-bound to ferret out the spy who has been leaking information to the Confederates. All evidence points to the passionate belle who readily responds to every touch and taste he metes out. One by one, he strips away Rose’s secrets, but Eric is not satisfied with owning the she-Rebel’s luscious body. He must uncover the truth of her past at any cost—even if it means the destruction of them both.

WARNING -- SPOILERISH This book is great. A victim of P.C. overkill, Civil War fiction is getting harder to find without a ton of unnecessary social commentary bogging down the storyline. Glass portrayed convincing viewpoints of how men and women living in the antebellum era perceived various controversial issues (slavery, the war, male and female roles in society, moral expectations.) This doesn't take over the storyline and compete with the romance; it is simply there for readers to consider and assign their own value judgments. I loathe historical romances portraying historical characters as having the same P.C.sensitivities common to the present; history is what it is for better or worse. The erotic romance is glorious. Rosalie and Eric have remarkable chemistry and connection from the start. I liked them both and found empathy for their respective motivations. Ironically, I found the story of their relationship very believeable; war and hardship can certainly contribute to intense, exciting relationships where people might step beyond norms in search of comfort and the illusion of normalcy in face of chaos. Conflict -- social expectations, political loyalties, war, personal histories -- crackles with the turn of every page. Much as I enjoyed the read, I was disappointed by some neglected loose ends and a rushed conclusion. In the beginning, Rose is coping with grief of a stillborn child, she considers installing a headstone over her daughter's unmarked grave, and we never hear anything else about that plot point. My liking/trust for Eric suffered in Chapter 6; although an aura of quasi - coercion/blackmail permeated the couple's involvement, Eric demanding oral sex from Rosalie in exchange for a wounded enemy soldier's release from custody crossed a line to sexual harrassment in my head. Rose's espionage ordeal was too simple and unconvincing. Eric, an attorney/attorney apprentice, could have discovered Rose's false confession simply by interrogating her. (Example: he could have demanded she describe what information she read/passed on to Confederate forces. Since Rosalie didn't read the papers, she wouldn't know that.)Instead, he just assumes her guilty and believes her false confession, however implausible he finds it. I would have awarded 5 stars to "Rebel Rose" with a tad more plot development and attention to resolution. Despite its less stellar moments, this is an excellent, entertaining, very sexy read with fascinating characters and incredible tension.

A Tender Historical Romance in the time of American Civil War. The characters are in vivid colour so much so that you can really feel for Rose who is trying to make a life for herself after the loss and grief of her husband and brother who are were fighting on opposite sides of this war and the loss of her unborn child, while struggling to keep food on the table for herself and her husband’s slave/brother and wife and their first child. Eric has such a likable nature who is tortured by his feeling of duty and honour and the confliction of both. You can’t help but have empathy for both characters. The physical relationship that develops between Rose and Eric is explained by the situations of war and their self-sacrifices of their human behaviour for the better of others. This story has the surprise of revenge by a short explanation of an event that happened and the appearance of crazy man of influence. Sweet and enjoyable story that justifies the self-sacrifices in the end. Beautifully written with descriptive and detailed scenes without the long drawn out history of war. I’m not a real history buff and I never liked history or war books but this has the war elements but not the full detailed facts that you need to know to follow the story. It was a good read. I loved the characters and their motivations felt very real and relate-able. I enjoyed the plot; the only reason I did not rate this as a 5 star read was because the ending felt rushed and unsatisfying.

Ms. Glass packs a punch into 100-some digital pages--a hunky hero, sex with a hint of dominance, and an evocative southern setting. Even in such a short novel, I found the romance totally convincing and the characters memorable. Highly recommended. (And it has a great cover, too!)
