The Dominant and submissive are not your usual cardboard cutout characters and I loved that. Thank you Ms. Joseph for giving us something different! I have to admit that there are parts of the story that are unpleasant at best, but good books elicit a range of emotions and the author gives us that. What makes someone choose this. There were times I could almost feel her pain and her determination to see it through. I admired her tenacity, but felt that she was too delicate at times to take what was doled out. Some parts seemed too harsh. I just wanted to understand more about what compelled the characters or when the turning point came to choose this life scene. Sort of a background. Interesting to say the least. However, the storyline of her and her ex was frankly a little unbelievable - ill-conceived and poorly executed. It was just so extreme without being extreme that I couldn't really get into it. I think part of that was how the heroine was written - she was super passive about it, and I just couldn't get behind that. If you're traumatized, you're traumatized, and at the level, you're not going to be super passive about it all of the time, sorry. So while I'm willing to concede that it was a nice love story with some cute kink thrown in (nothing to write home about, but enough to be enjoyable), I'm still left with a curious feeling of dissatisfaction. Mainly that stems from this being more of a love story than an erotic novel. If you like 'em hot, the excerpt is probably the hottest part of the whole book, just so you know. I loved the emotion and intensity of the storyline and I did get really emotionally drawn in, which is so rare in erotica. The sex was hot, the kink was original and not your same old tired scenes. I loved that Dave was a sadist and yet so loving and protective at the same time. The menages with his friend had me squirming!!!! This was definitely a super romantic book, but I like my BDSM in the context of a loving relationship so this hit right at my sweet spot.
