I found myself getting up - going away - doing something else several times during reading, which just does not happen if I like a book. And, as also happens if I fail to be enthralled, I started nitpicking. Kate and her brothers and sisters are royal shapeshifters, who each have bodyguards cum bedwarmers. It was not explained why being lovers was practically obligatory for the bodyguards. Kate can shift into any shape she pleases – which is considered a defect in an adult. This also was not expained. It would seem a great advantage to me to be able to shift into bird, beast or fish as needed, instead of being limited to human and one other form. Kate also discovers she has one other special abiltiy, which is also considered to be a defect – and again the author does not explain why. Kate's bodyguard and lover is Aidan. In an emergency, which causes him to be injured, it turns out that he is not human. Why being a member of his species is negative is not explained. The author also says that his other form is physically incompatible with a human. But she does not explain in detail what he actually looks like apart from dark, hard, ridged. I think alternative methods for being together and some inventiveness in this place might have made the tale really interesting, but no, it just is not possible, end of story. Kate and Aidan finally find a way to be together, but the details are left unexplored. For example, would two different species be crossfertile? Can a shapeshifter breed in whatever form is assumed?
