Book 1 in the Saddle Up and Ride series.

When Ray Justice receives a phone call that his father has died, he’s shocked. As far as he knew, his father passed away twenty-three years earlier. Adding to the confusion, he finds that he’s inherited a large cattle ranch in Montana.

Alfred Deacon came to the J Bar Ranch as a broken cowboy in search of acceptance and honest work. What he found was a best friend and a group of cowboys he’d do anything for. When Ray walks into his life, Deacon is torn between loyalties to his dead friend and desire so strong it makes him weak.

Ray comes face-to-face with a past he didn’t know he had and a man he didn’t know he needed.

Other book in the series is better. I am looking forward to the rest, but this seemed more of a throw away to get the series started than a considered attempt at a story.

Granted that the story could have been longer, but I'm a huge fan of Carol Lynne and this story did not disappoint. We did not need to have hundreds of pages explaining the history between Ray's parents to know what happened. Ray was very sweet and you can't help but like him and Deacon was a good and credible partner. Personally I love it and would recommend reading!

I liked this story. I wish that it was longer too, and the plot felt rushed because of it's short length, with the main characters falling in love very quickly, but this isn't the only book that has that particular issue. I've noticed that many of the ebooks I've bought are getting shorter while the price is the same or higher. Still this is a very good series, the second and third installments are out (although EC rejected the third so Carol Self -published it).

Ray thought he knew about his family history. It's a horrible thing to find that you have been cheated of a father's love. Deacon is a great guy. Loved this character.

I really enjoyed this story. I felt that both characters were sympathetic and sweet. I disagree with the reviewer who felt that Ray should have had to face more of his fathers slightly crazed venom. I think the way it was written showed an understanding that we don't all need to see all the bad stuff. Deacon was right to protect his partner. That is what I enjoy about Carol Lynne's stories. Partners should help and support each other.

I wish the book would have been longer. I also thought that the father sure had a lot of hate towards a son he never even tried to contact or get to know. The mother wasn't much better telling her son that his father was dead.

I have purchased many of Carol's books and have enjoyed all of them. But this book was to short, the story line had way to many holes in it. I would not recommend it at all.

I have read every single one of Carol Lynne books, but it seems lately her stories get shorter and shorter without enough plot and character development. I didn't buy that the two leads fell in love so quickly and I would have liked if Ray knew about the letter his father wrote him to add a little more substance to the story. Overall, not one of Carol Lynne's best.
