Unable to support herself and her beloved servants, Widow Carrie Hatcher contemplates the unthinkable—offering her services for money. Forced to board wounded Colonel Wesley McEwen in her home, Carrie vows to make the striking Confederate soldier her first “client”.

But Carrie gets more than she bargained for when she agrees to comply with Wesley’s every illicit request for one week. Throughout long, sultry nights, Wesley tutors Carrie in every position, every skill, of her illicit new trade. From dark taboos to pleasurable punishments, Carrie becomes his willing pupil.

Passions inflamed, the couple becomes more scandalously intimate but Carrie realizes she wants to give him far more than just her body. The colonel, however, may be too haunted by his past to risk accepting more than he’s bought and paid for.

I read Glass historicals regularly, and I've reconciled her style tends more towards romantic erotica than erotic romance. "Bought and Paid For" is an amazing, edgy, extremely erotic work chronicling the budding relationship between a Civil War widow and a convalescing Confederate soldier in her care. Glass strips away any Mitchel-esque romantic glamor concerning this turbulent period. The main characters are hauntingly well-drawn, neither has escaped the losses and deprivations of war unscathed, and their respective damages impact their efforts to move forward with life and build new relationships. At times, I found these characters too flawed to really "work" as romance characters. Example *SPOILER ALERT* the hero lies about his marital status to the heroine and doesn't come clean until near the story's end. I found this offensive, and its impact upon his treatment of the heroine bordered on dysfunctional because of it. This is a very dark story focussing on hard choices and desperate times: the dishonesty just lent to the angst. The story's last-minute paranormal twist jarred me; it read as gratuitous and convenient. Historical accuracy is varied; respectable gentlemen don't abandon a lady on the street because she refuses his marriage proposal. The erotica is scorching and rife with chemistry. Pacing could have been better, and I've seen better editorical quality in Glass's subsequent stories. I do consider this one of Glass's more memorable works. The situations, characters, and tension are compelling.

This was a great romance. I love this particular genre; American historical romances. I felt the ending was a little stunted, but overall an enjoyable novel.

Although I read historical novels, this is the first time that I have purchased 19th/20th century erotica. This book was very good, the sex was hot and the characters were well developed. I look forward to reading more books like this one.

WOW! What an amazing story! You really got the feel of the time period. The desperation of those that had little choice but to survive at all costs. Carrie is such a courageous character and Wesley is exactly the type of man that she needs in so many ways. He teaches her things about herself that she had never even considered. I was totally drawn into their story and anxious to see if they would have a happily ever after!

For all the steamy sex woven through the latter part of the book, there is also some very stark realism throughout the totality of the story about the war and what people (especially lone women) could be reduced to. I liked the stoicism of the women-their strength, heart and determination to overcome no matter the cost to their "soul", while the compassion of the Colonel was most endearing. This one was one to put on the re-read shelf to enjoy again.
