Ryan doesn't know what he's getting himself into when he signs on for the season at a gay resort on a private Caribbean island. Eager for what he sees as an easy job in paradise, Ryan fails to mention he's straight. Convinced he can handle any sexual overtures with a smile and a shrug, he's unprepared for the onslaught of men eager to get their hands on the new guy. With his long blond hair, green eyes and a body hot enough to make grown men cry, Ryan must sidestep the constant attention from guests and staff alike while trying to maintain his front.

Sean, a year-round employee, dreads peak season when hot young studs arrive to invade his space, focused on casual sex or finding a sugar daddy. When Ryan is assigned to his bungalow, Sean expects more of the same. Yet when they meet, he becomes an instant believer in love at first sight. He promises himself to win Ryan's heart. It never occurs to him the odds are absurdly stacked against him.

I recently read "Handyman" by Claire Thompson, and I'm quite fond of the idea of a supposedly straight guy discovering he's not so straight after all. Thus, my expectations on this book were quite high. Maybe that's why I was really rather disappointed by it. The set-up is plausible, but the execution of it is not; it is nigh impossible to understand what motivates the characters; the dialogue is contrived at best. Sean is supposed to be the understanding, comfortably gay guy who eases Ryan's transition from "straight as an arrow" to "maybe not so straight", but anyone who pushes for sex after their partner says that they're not comfortable with it is less than understanding as far as I'm concerned. In short, I would recommend "Handyman" by the same author, but I would not recommend this book. It's not awful, but it's far from the standard set by "Handyman".

This was actually better than I expected. I didn't know how the whole 'straight but gay' thing was going to work out, but Ms. Thompson does a great job of making it believable. Even when things started getting a little rocky for Ryan and Sean it didn't turn into a soap opera, so I'd definitely say give it a try! -Dana, Reading Amidst the Chaos readingamidstthechaos.blogspot.com
