The author is a really good writer, her plots are interesting and her sex scenes are vivid. But here I was offended by her treatment of Marlene. Because she is not the heroine the author allows her to be raped for the enjoyment of all (that would be us readers) not once but twice. (First unwanted double pen then gang raped). As erotica it "works", but it is done in a really mean-spirited way. Later Charlie, after she herself has prostituted herself, calls Marlene a whore and other names. Sisterhood, anyone? I didn't find Charlie charming. She seemed cold and sort of stupid and unimaginative, certainly not passionate. She kept bumbling and stuttering. Her wealthy background, her ex- fiancé, her brother, even her clothes (rough, long, patched, ugly skirt, etc.) were a turn off. Oh, and did I mention her lack of compassion? The central sex scene was just too creepy for me. Charlie really wants to have oral sex, but he says it is dangerous. She really, really wants him to have intercourse with her. No, that is too dangerous too. What is the safest thing? Drum roll! Anal! Why? She really doesn't want to do it. So she tells him she doesn't care about the danger. They get to do the deed and you know what? She is in mortal danger unless they do...drumroll...anal. Why? Not romantic, not erotic. Gross. The heroine was really whiny and pathetic when it came to sex, not at all like the strong woman who worked hard so that she and her brother could survive after losing all their money. Lynx worked hard to calm and soothe her, and she was always saying yes and then changing her mind and being scared to death. Plus she kept on thinking that she was a wh*re. Her indecisiveness that continued until about 3/4 of the book drove me crazy! And then she did a total one-eighty and figured out she "loved" him. With all that fear/lust she felt for Lynx it just wasn't believable. This is definitely not one of my favorite stories. The characters and setting is sci-fi, but it doesn't feel like you have to take notes and concentrate intensely to follow what's going on like a lot of other novels I've read (or I should say started to read...) The personalities are believable and you develop a real desire to find out what happens to them. I've read other books by Evangeline Anderson and I've loved them all.
